HLC Visits IU

By Emma Alexander, Honors Communications Intern

This past Friday, our Honors Leadership Council (HLC) ventured down to Bloomington to visit Indiana University’s Hutton Honors College. This trip occurred entirely due to the inspiration and efforts of the members of the HLC themselves. Their adviser and attending staff member, Sashaun Wood, credits the entire experience to the students. It was their idea, and they are the ones who reached out, located appropriate contacts, and made the entire trip possible.
On the day of the trip, the students in attendance were Peter Boyd, Giovanni Malloy, Claire Lee, Jordan Paine, Anand Balar, Ellisa DeFur, and Nate Gollmer. As part of the day’s activities, our Honors Leaders got a tour of the campus facilities, had lunch, and met with leaders of IU’s Hutton organizations to discuss program and project ideas as well as to compare the ways in which each university structures their leadership organizations.
Several of the council representatives in attendance shared their reflections on the day’s activities.
Jordan Paine, a junior in the college of agriculture and this week’s Student Spotlight (check out her student feature here), said,
The trip to IU allowed us to get a glimpse at the organization and structure of another Honors College. It was good to see what we wished we had and knew we did not want. However, the best part was that the council got to bond as a group on this trip.
Giovanni Malloy, a junior in Industrial Engineering, also shared his thoughts.
The trip to IU was extremely rewarding, as we were able to take away some points of improvement we can make for our Honors College and the HLC. They had some great ideas for exciting events we plan to implement at Purdue.
Claire Lee, a sophomore in Political Science, disclosed,
It was a wonderful day of getting to not only learn about what other Honors Colleges and Honors Students Groups were doing and finding success with but also to share about the Purdue Honors College!
